I have just started using MuseScore & am having trouble drag/drop the segno & D.S. onto the score. What am I doing wrong?

You have to drag the segno & D.S. onto a measure rather than above the measure. The measure will highlight when it is ready to be dropped.
This is just a blind guess at "what you are doing wrong" since I can see what you are doing and you didn't provide any details.
