losing chord names

When I save a file in MusicXML file and later reopen it, all chord names are gone. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Could you post an example MSCZ file? My guess is, you didn't enter the chords correctly in the first place, and therefore they aren't being exported to the MusicXML file. MuseScore has a specific set of chords it can recognize, depending on which chord name style file you have loaded. See the chordname entry in the handbook:

http://musescore.org/en/handbook/chord-name

Normally, when you enter a recognized chord, you can see its display change - the letter "b" changing to a flat sign, the "#" to a sharp sign, etc. That's how you'd know it worked.

Looking at the XML file, I don't see the chords there, so the problem appears to be with the export. But it works for me in my own scores, too. So I wonder what's different? Anything at all unusual about how you created this score?

Apparently I never ran into this because I never use an actual grand staff - that is, two staves for one instrument. Instead, I always create two separate instruments, one for the treble clef and one for the bass clef. This allows the Hide Empty Staves option to work, also allows different sounds for each staff if I want. Anyhow, setting up your score this way ends up being a workaround. You have to manually add the brace to connect the two staves, but other than that, it should work just like a grand staff only better :-)
