Transpose problem

• Oct 3, 2016 - 00:25

There are only 12 transposition possibilities, MuseScore has 26 ?????????

I understand you love to be complicated but will you please be so kind to add the number of steps in the drop down list ? It is just a number to be added.

Frankly, I find it easier just to change the instrument (right-click on bar, Stave Properties etc.) if it's for a transposing instrument or just press F2 as often as needed to achieve the transposition that I want. I find the augemented/diminshed/perfect etc, all a bit old-fashioned and confusing for many. I agree that adding a number of steps (semi-tones) would be useful for some.

I don't quite understand the problem. There are 12 ways to transpose so long as you stay within one octave and transpose only in one direction. If you want to transpose both upwards and downwards you get already 24 possibilities.

Anyhow the transpose tool allows you different ways to do the job--by interval or by target key or else diatonically. Everybody can choose the best way for them. So exactly what is the problem?

To tidy up the accidentals do a [Ctrl]a and press Down arrow then Up arrow. If you're writing for transposing instruments, though, MuseScore handles it automatically. Set up all the instruments then enter the notes for everything in Concert Pitch and then turn off Concert Pitch to see the "real" notes for each instrument. If you prefer to enter the transposed notes directly (I tend to do this for brass band as I got used to it way before computers came along) then don't use Concert Pitch.

I recently am learning the saxophone. I play on my keyboard along with the songs in Cubase, use the score and/or the piano roll to enter the notes in MuseScore, have Musescore play the part to see if all is right and then transpose it for sax. Alt sax is Eb, 3 semitones down. Minor third but I prefer to use numbers.

The up/down arrows are doing a good job to tidy up the accidentals, thanks.

Good idea, I can go back to the original. Have to check this out, but I don’t know how to do this yet. Found MuseScore only last week and watched the tutorials on the YouTube channel.

Thank you for the support underquark :-)
