MIDI Files: Could they be made to Recognise Fermatas and to Hold Notes at them?

• Feb 19, 2012 - 16:13

Dear MuseScore Developers,

Greetings!

I am currently using MuseScore to transcribe folk song melodies from the "Take 6" MSS.--For details see

http://folkopedia.efdss.org/wiki/Take_6_Transcription_Programme

In this exercise the creation of MIDI files from the MuseScore files is crucial since many of our young folk singers have limited skills in the reading of sheet music and the MIDIs are the best way for them to familiarise themselves with the melodies.

At present a colleague is helping me with the work and luckily he uses Finale, which recognises fermatas and holds notes with fermatas over them for an appropriate time, i.e. for a time that is longer than the value of the note. I know that this matter has been previously raised on our Forums but have there been any further recent developments? It would be good if MuseScore could make like Finale on this one without the need for complicated workarounds.

Many thanks to all you folks who are developing MuseScore; it is an excellent programme.

Regards and best wishes,

Lewis.

There is actually no way of storing a fermata in a MIDI file other than by changing the ticks per beat setting.

It is a fiddly process to do even in a MIDI sequncer.

The workaround in MuseSCore is to use note properties and fiddle with the on and offtime propertiers till you get what you need.

Dear Michael,

Greetings, and thank you for your reply.

I am sorry: I did not express myself clearly. I do not want to be able to store fermatas in MIDI files; what I want is for notes with fermatas over them in a MuseScore file to be lengthened by MuseScore in the MIDI files that it creates. Finale can do this and that is why we are using Finale to generate the MIDIs that we post onto the Take 6 Transcription Programme pages that I have linked to above. (MuseScore and Finale can, of course, talk to each other because both programmes can open, save and create MusicXML files.) Thank you for the workaround, though; that is a bit fiddly but it would work.

On another point that has been raised in discussion, and to add to the wish list, it would be good, if possible, to have a choice between default settings and user designated ones.

Regards and best wishes,

Lewis.
