Playback Issues

• Feb 21, 2012 - 02:33

I am having the following issues when listening to a sheet of music in the program:
1. any note with a tremolo (which im trying to use for various percussion instruments) sounds like a regular note instead of a roll
2. when a crescendo or decrescendo is added, it dosent work when playing back the music
Any suggestions to either problem?

Not all markings affect playback in the current version. i think 2.0 may have some improvements here, but still, remember, MuseScore is first and foremost a notation program, not a playback program.

There is a plugin you can install (see the Plugins link at right of this page) that can make crescendos play back as such.

The reason i picked up MuseScore is mostly because of it's playback features. I had the impression after doing some reading on the forums that over time the community supporters would get many if not most of the articulations working with MIDI. I'm just thinking that if it's first and foremost a notation program, why it has any MIDI playback at all. If it's going to have it, it would be helpful if it sounds good on playback as well as looking good on paper.

I do hope that MIDI playback becomes a bit more important as time goes by.

"First and foremost" refers to priority. The top priority in MuseScore is notation. This doesn't mean that there aren't second and third priorities. Playback will undoubtedly be improved in future; the reason it has "any playback at all" is that it is very helpful to have an aural check that the notes entered are as intended. A notation program without any playback would rightly be criticised as unhelpful.

As the notation aspects of MuseScore become more and more complete, I am sure that playback will get more focus.

Your response is much appreciated both in its swiftness and content. I do realize that notation must be a priority and I just wanted the comfort of knowing that playback is yet to be improved. I posted elsewhere that I'm confident that over time MuseScore will easily outpace the commercial versions. I am well aware that playback with multiple voces and staves is a vexing task given MIDI channel and bank limitations. As a retired software engineer hobbying in MIDI music transposition, I hope to continue to offer suggestions. In the meanwhile, I still would like to suggest some method of indicating which selections from the Palettes currently support MIDI playback or at least an indication in the documentation.
