Measures Jumping Around

• Jan 8, 2017 - 17:25

I started writing a score and everything seemed to work fine until recently. For approximately the first half of my score, I can edit, add or remove notes just fine. However, for the second half, for every slight adjustment that I make, the measure I'm editing jumps either over or down . For example, if I have a G in the treble clef, when I drag it to an A, the measure will jump to the next line, and when I drag it up by one to a B it will jump back. This makes writing a score very hard because I can not write without it jumping all over the place. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to lock measures into place?

Attached is a link to a video demonstrating my problem. I first show how the first half of the score works fine, and how the second half jumps around. The screen recorder is low quality, so you can't tell, but the measure actually jumps really fast, faster than the screen recorder can process.

I can't access the video but it sounds as though you might want to try Continuous View instead of Page View. MuseScore continually adjusts spacing to optimise the number of measures per page and this can result in an annoying jump towards the end of a line or page but also during a re-draw of the page when even a slight change is made in the middle.

The annoying wild jumps that MS makes drives me up the wall sometimes. I sometimes put my new measure in the middle of the screen and it still jumps. I hate that.

Of course there's a change in the measure length when you go from a whole measure rest to any note followed by any rest. When I put the measure in the middle of the window so it won't jump when the measure size changes to within the limits of the window the crazy jump shouldn't happen.

I know that by 3.0 this is going to be improved because MS will not recalculate the entire score when a measure changes like it does now. That should reduce the crazy jumping that MS does right now. Currently there are time when I enter a note, the measure jumps off to the left of the screen, I keep going and the measure jumps back to where I had it and then sometimes actually stays put, but other times jumps back off the screen or stays off the screen. Stopping entering notes and grabbing my mouse so I can see that I didn't make a mistake is part of the process right now. I will be very happy if it would stop.

In general, this is normal / unavoidable / correct. It's just like word wrap in a word processor - something adding one letter to a word might cause it to be too long to fit on the line and thus it jumps down to the next. Conversely for removing a letter in the middle of a word. If a measure is just barely on the edge of fitting or not, then even the most seemingly-inconsequential change could trigger this. You could try adding line breaks to lock in a more liberal spacing while editing, or just switching to continuous view indeed protects you from being affected by these layouting changes while you are still in the note-editing phase of your project.
