Bug - how to update before reporting it?
Hello. There is a bug I want to report, but the "How to Report bugs" instructions say the first thing to do is upgrade and see if the bug still persists. Problem: I do not know how to upgrade.
I am a recent convert to Ubuntu and don't know much about how to do things yet. I only know how to install things via the software centre. The version I downloaded from there is version 1.1 revision 4611. So I need to upgrade it, but don't know what I'm supposed to click on to make the upgrade work:

P.S. The "bug" is that if I try to open or create a third file when I already have two open, everything crashes.

Looks like you've found the correct link, but I don't know anything about management of Linux systems. I'd guess you should start by clicking the link on that page that says "Read about installing".
Based on your description of the bug you want to report, though, I suspect it will turn out to not be entirely reproducible - I doubt it will turn out to be true that on all Linux systems, having any two scores open and then trying to open or create any third file will always lead to a crash. It will probably turn out to be something more specific than that, like only with the specific two files you have open, or only when in stacked windows mode, or an out of memory issue on your particular system, or something like that. So even if you can't get the latest version installed right away, you might want to get a head start on seeing if you can narrow the problem down a bit more.
Another note is, focus is generally on the trunk now (what will eventually become 2.0), rather than 1.2 :).
I don't think nightly builds are available for Ubuntu (unless you build them yourself?), but who knows soon :).

Thank you for the replies everyone. I have read the instructions on that webpage and I still don't know how to do it.
"Step 1: On the PPA's overview page, look for the heading that reads Adding this PPA to your system. Make a note of the PPA's location, which looks like:
ppa:gwibber-daily/ppa"
Where and what is a "PPA overview page????"
Please can somebody help and tell me how to do it? Edit: oooh, I've figured ir out. It was that funny gibberish on the webpage. I am doing it now...hope it works!
I have got another (more serious) bug now, so I need to upgrade ASAP to see if it goes away.
The pallette won't open. I can live without being able to open extra files at the same time, but I do need the pallette! :((

I still can't help on the Linux installation issues, but could you explain more about what you mean when you say the palette won't open? Which palette? How are you trying to open it? What happens when you do whatever it is that you expect to open a palette?

Well I started a new thread about it and somebody suggested that I should reset the factory settings and so I followed their link and it worked. It's all back to normal now. But basically the thing called a palette was missing. The one that has lots of things you can select, such as time signatures, drums, clefs, time signatures, etc., etc. Without it I couldn't do much except enter notes.
