creating new score from scratch

• Jun 2, 2012 - 12:08

I have created a new score from scratch several times in the two weeks or so that I've been using this program. Today, when I try to do it again, no matter how carefully I go through the system all I get is a title, but no stave. I'm baffled.
Thinking it might be a problem with my computer I uninstalled and re-installed musescore, but it has made no difference.
I'm getting very frustrated.

I am having computer problems now, so I haven't yet tried restoring musescore's factory settings.
A diagnostic program I ran said that musescore was the program that crashed most often. But I'd hate to give it up now I've used it. And my computer problems may be the cause of musescore crashing, rather than the other way round. I really don't know. I'm at my wits end. I use my computer so much in my teaching, as I have most of my resources on it.
Has anyone else had computer crashes which appear to be caused by musescore?

In the new score wizard, what instruments did you add? How many measures long did you say you wanted the piece to be? And did you turn on the Hide Emoty Staves option under Style->Edit General Style? That would normally be reset to off on each new score, but you might want to check just in case.

Oh, one other possibility - if there are too many staves to fit on the fist page along with the title, then the first system will start on the second page, so you'd have to scroll over to see it.

As I said, it should normally turn itself off for each score, so if it does turn out it is turned on, that would be a bug in itself.

Assuming that doesn't turn out to be it, maybe the next thing to do is to try making a screen capture video using something like screenr.com, so we can see if there isn't something else going on. Also, it might be interesting to save the empty score that gets created and post that.

Looks like your "Space" setting in Layout->Page Settings is set to an impossibly small value. The initial value of this setting comes from Edit->Preferences->Score. Change it back to the default of 1.764, or some other reasonable value, and new scores will come out normal again. You can also fix your current score by changing the value in Layout->Page Settings directly.

If you think you might have change the Preference setting yourself, then I'd expect this to get everything back to normal. But if you don't think there is any chance that you altered that setting yourself, then somehow your settings have become corrupted, and you probably would be best off running the Revert procedure.

That worked! Thank you so much.
I did change some settings on a completed piece of music in order to reduce the number of pages for the purpose of playing live with someone else.
I wouldn't have thought I'd have changed anything so drastically, but it's possible I did it unknowingly. the important thing is that you've given me the answer, and I'll know next time, if there is a next time.
