Note and rest together
How do I notate something like this? In the left hand of a piano accompaniment, in 3/4 time, hold a low C for 3 beats, but on beats 2 and 3 play E and then G quarter notes. So, the C would have to have a quarter rest above it on beat 1, followed by the other notes on 2 and 3.
When I try to do this Musescore can't seem to handle the concept of a note and rest at the same time.
I'm sure this is covered somewhere in the handbook but I haven't been able to locate it.

Excellent. Exactly what I was looking for. I suppose I'd have found that eventually, but you saved me a LOT of time!
To elaborate a little bit on this: just as one singer could not simultaneously both sing and be-silent, neither can there be “a note and a rest at the same time” ... u-n-l-e-s-s ... there are, in fact, “two singers!”
Thus, the MuseScore concept of “voices.” Each voice must continue to abide by the “either you are singing right now or you are silent right now” rule, but each voice is clearly understood to be “singing simultaneously.”
How you then choose to notate those voices upon the final printed page is up to you.

Thank you for the clarification. Makes perfect sense.
