Sound problems

• Aug 1, 2012 - 10:20

I've been using Musescore for a few months now. I recently bought a new computer and it worked on the new computer for two weeks without problems. Recently, the sound has become fuzzy and distorted. A piece will start out playing fine and then stop working part way through. My partner runs the full version of Guitar Pro 6 with no audio problems. All other audio on our computer works. I have run A registry cleaner to uninstall Musescore and then re-installed it but the problem is still occurring. My Sound Device is Realtek High Definition Audio. I'm running Musescore 1.2 - the freeware version that seems to be available. What seems to be the problem?

Thank you for the info... any ideas what changes I should make to the reverb settings? I seem to have found one solution so far if anyone else has this problem. I right-clicked the program, selected properties, then selected compatibility mode. Then I checked the box for the program to run in Windows XP compatibility mode, as it worked on my old dinosaur laptop running Win XP. This one is running 7. It seems to work so far... I had tried the newest Nightly Build and following the appropriate instructions for running the nightly build, but my computer could only open the file once, then the program crashed. All other times I tried it told me the program was missing QtCore4.Dll and therefore could not open the file. I would like to try the reverb setting though to see if that fixes the problem just out of curiosity. But running it in older compatibility mode does seem to work so far. Thanks again.

Make sure both the reverb and chorus settings are at zero. You may notice that the sliders are not at the bottom even if you see zero values, so make sure to drag the sliders down, too. I'm using the same audio driver and OS, and these steps solved the problem for me, however (there's always a however in software), the setting doesn't stick from session to session, so you may find yourself having to repeat these steps as soon as you launch the program.

BTW, I tried compatibility mode as you suggested, but it didn't help. Also, the nightly builds don't work for me, either, but that's understandable, as they are still under development.

Collective experience is that you do not need to leave these settings at zero.

The chorus slider has no effect that I'm aware of.

Merely moving the Reverb slider usually sorts this problem.

People have also reported that changing the reverb width setting also solves the problem.

In my case simply moving the slider cleared it, and I was then able to set the Reverb to where I wanted it, and that setting has remained ever since.

In my case, after I've dragged the reverb slider to the bottom, it always returns to the center when I start the next session, but the value indicated is often still zero. Sometimes I can leave it that way and playback is successful, but not for long, because if I keep doing that for the next couple of sessions, eventually the value indicated is 50%, and the playback fails.

Consequently, I've formed the habit of zeroing the values as soon as I start MuseScore. It isn't too much trouble, but sometimes I forget, especially if I've opened a score from Windows Explorer by association. The sound of the failing playback is quite startling, and can be embarrassing if I'm trying to show off one of my scores to a friend who's with me at the time. ;)

Looks like you must have a lot of speciality soundfonts loaded. Could be the issue you are seeing is unique to one of those in particular. Can you see if the problem is specific to one instrument, by soloing each in turn? if you can get it to the point of one instrument with one soundfont and identifying one particular measure where the problem starts, that would help. Could also be your CPU and/or RAM are insufficient for what you are trying to do, and the problem will go away if you simplify. That in itself would be interesting to know as well.
