Velocity

• Sep 22, 2012 - 01:05

Hallo.
Will it be possible to create the velocitys of the notes by input with a midi-keyboard live? That would be very useful. It´s a very great program but this feature I am missing. Very helpful it would be for example if the crescendo and decrescendo would be translated into midi meaning too(velocity).
Thanks
Georg

No idea about MIDI input, but playback of crescendo and diminuendo is already implemented in the next major version, 2.0. And in the current version, you can install a plugin (see Plugins menu at right of this page) that does a pretty good job as well.

Firstly, as I understand it, MIDI input is step time only in MuseScore are present. This suggests to me that velocity would be fixed as well.

Crescendo and decrescendo are not actually controlled from velocity in MIDI, although the velocity you play at on a keyboard does affect volume.

Velocity is useless for this purpose on instruments which are capable of changing dynamics during a sustained note, so there is a Midi Controller specially for that purpose called the Expression Controller which is #11.

I am not sure whether version 2.0 will support this use of this controller, but there will be a MIDI controller section for stave text which may be able to use this. The synth engine already supports it, so it is a question of providing the interface in MuseScore to send the appropriate messages.

It sounds to me as though you are wanting to record performances from your keyboard, in which case you would be better to use a sequencer for this purpose - there are many around for all platforms, some free, some not, but you may find the list here helpful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MIDI_editors_and_sequencers

The plugin works great thanks!
I´m using the sequenzer logic , but: The method of composing as a classical musician there is not the best. Muse Score (I think) is very good for it. It´s like you have a sheet of paper...

And when the velocity input would work too, you would be able to make your composition "ready" for work in logic.
Steps:
1) Composing in Musescore
2) Export Midi-File
3) Import in Logic
4) Record additional live-instruments

When you have the ability for velocity by step input by composing you can save a lot of work.

But: Thanks for the intersting answers...
Greetings
Georg

Do note that the dynamics you add in MuseScore (pp, mf, ff, etc) *do* affect velocity of the playback and MIDI output. I am not so sure it would really be good for velocity of notes as entered via MIDI should override the velocity set by your dynamics. I would imagine most people entering notes aren't paying that much attention to how hard they are pressing the keys, and it would also be very tough to get any sort of consistency in velocity given you are entering the notes one at a time. Entering the notes then setting the velocity in large chunks via dynamics seems the much better way to go. Is there some reason you feel that controlling velocity during input is really *better* than doing so via dynamics, or via Note Properties?
