Play back sound - weird !

• Oct 23, 2012 - 12:44

I'm running the latest download of MuseScore on a Toshiba Satellite A30, with Ubuntu12.04, slowly finding my way round the software.
One problem I have - when I hit the Play button, it starts perfectly, but after about 4 bars the sound changes to, well, difficult to describe, "fuzzy" / "chirpy" ?
If I change instrument, the voice changes, but this effect starts again, after a few bars.
Searching other threads, I've tried looking at Synthesiser settings but both settings, Reverb and Chorus are zero, "Preset not implemented".
In Edit/Preferences/IO, I've got Use internal synthesiser checked, Alsa unchecked, and Port audio checked with API set to Alsa and default.

I'd be most grateful for any advice,
John

You need to move the Reverb return control on the Synthesiser page.

It doens't matter what you set it to, merely moving it should clear the problem.

It did for me in Windows anyhow :)

I also had the same issue under Windows; the work around is to set Reverb to any value EXCEPT 0 (full down); if then you save your score, it will store the change and (hopefully) that score will be free from the problem.

I never had the problem under Ubuntu, though and rumor was it was a Windows-only issue; now we have an Ubuntu case too.

It seems to be working now with each score I lay down, and doesn't need re-setting for new files.

Having played around with various settings of reverb and chorus, I find that I can modify the Harp instrument to sound quite like my recently aqcuired antique dulcimer.
The idea of being able to teach myself to read music, play an instrument, and have another dulcimer accompanying me is still pretty amazing.

Being only 74, I've left it a bit late in the day, but I thought it was time to catch up with the grandchildren !
