Improved and simplified Concert Pitch mode

• Nov 28, 2012 - 14:27

Currently, MuseScore displays Concert Pitch by transposing not only the key but also the octaves of transposing instruments. I think this isn't really necessary, since the purpose of Concert Pitch is just to give a quick reading of the score's harmonic space, making composing and analyzing a lot easier than transposed scores.

But the additional lines in Concert Pitch mode spoil the purpose of having an easy reading of anything.

I read in some other posts that Concert Pitch changed CLEFS in the score. In my opinion, this isn't necessary and would generate a lot more work than it is useful.

There would be more complex ways of implementing this, but the easiest way would be just to ignore octaves when showing Concert Pitch.

I had already posted this in the Issue Tracker, under Feature Requests: http://musescore.org/en/node/19105

Comments

Simce it's probably more appropriate to discuss this here rather than in the tracker, I'll repeat the comments I posted there:

While I wouldn't be opposed to this, the more usual way of dealing with this is by using different clefs for the concert score versus the transposed score. No mew modes are required. Simply use treble-8 as your concert clef and you get the effect desired. This also allows you to use bass clef for instruments where that is a better choice, like baritone saxophone.

Having separate concert and transposed clefs isn't supported in the current version but apparently will be in 2.0.
