Ubuntu 10.04: MIDI input delayed

• Jan 3, 2013 - 12:01

System is Ubuntu 10.04 with MuseScore 0.96 and AKAI LPK25 USB keyboard as input device. Notation does not show up on the screen until the "N" button is released. Then all input shows up at once. Input with computer keyboard or mouse works as intended. Is this a known issue? Any hints on how to fix this problem?

Ubuntu 10.04 is obsolete and will no longer be supported by Canonical in April this yeaar.

Youshould therefore seriously consider upgrading your OS

MuseScore 0.9.6 is also obsolete and has been superseded by the MuseScorew 1.x series, currently at 1.2

I would suggest the first step in resolving this issue is upgrading your system accordingly.

1.1 is what I get following the instructions on how to upgrade MuseScore on my system. That is fine for me. The OS is due to a distribution upgrade anyway, and I suspect to get version 1.2 with that. The system and notation software are used by a person that is far from being a digital native. So any changes that come with updates and upgrades demand serious testing and a certain time of practice and getting used to. I'm not in hurry to get the latest version as long as there are no annoying bugs.

If you've got the download capacity and a DVD burner (1.9GB download) you could create a "Live DVD" of ubuntu studio 12.04 and give it a try. Includes MuseScore 1.2, and heaps of audio and visual programs. It also avoids the new "Unity" desktop that comes with standard ubuntu 12.04 (although that's easy to change even if you do upgrade to standard 12.04).

I use MS 1.2 in xubuntu 12.04. I'm trying ubuntu studio 12.04 in a virtual machine and the appearance is good and everything seems to be functioning (can't really assess actual performance in a virtual machine, though).

You've nothing to lose by creating a live DVD or USB stick.

1st off, underquark is right on the money with the live stick idea. I highly recommend getting a 4-8GB stick for dirt cheap, and not only putting the Ubuntu of your choice, but also copying your important files to it as a backup.

Now to the meat of the issue. I finally got my studio back up and running after Irene decided to decimate it last year. I upgraded to 12.10 for UbuntuStudio, and as I got JACK up and running, I decided to go for Musescore and see if I was finally able to get MIDI input from an old M-Audio Keystation I found in my attic. My issue is that although the instructions here seem to mention a Port Map to the instrument, I've yet to find that on the I/O preferences page. am I just missing something, or is it more of a matter of certain MIDI/USB adapters aren't recognized yet.

I also agree with you about Unity... jeebus I like my desktop clean and useable, not cluttered and cloned after an OSX or Winders machine.

Sorry for the off-topicness of this, but thought it was important to verify the live-stick and backup as well as hope to find out about the MIDI input issue I'm having.

Cheers,
Sean
