You don't.
Actually, you can. Just create a custom text style (Style / Text) and assign that to selected chords using the Inspector.

OK, right, didn't think of that. But you can't in the same way as to other text via the text tool

How? When you load style it changes all of the characters of the chord names. Doesn't it?

Not "load style" - that's something totally different. You create a new text style, called, say, "Small Chords", by hitting the "New" button in the Text Style dialog and giving it the desired attributed (probably also a vertical offset?). Then you assign that style to just the selected chords using the Inspector. At no time do you use Save Style or Load Style; no MSS files are involved here.
