Repeating D.S. then Coda

• May 17, 2017 - 02:51

Is there some way to repeat a D.S. so the first time the score doesn't go straight to the coda? Or would I need to write the map differently?

It's always good to use an example score... (thanks Shoichi)

See:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/repeat
especially:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/repeat#examples
where it explains that D.S. al Coda requires both a To Coda and a Coda symbol.

Your score (you should rename yours to distinguish it from Shoichi's and my own example) shows no jumping off point (To Coda) for playing the Coda.
You show voltas, a Segno, a D.S. al Coda, a Coda symbol, but no To Coda.

So, from what measure do you wish to jump to the coda? This is crucial for the player's roadmap.

Regards.

Edit:
Also, until what measure number do the 2nd (and 3rd) volta play?
You show measure 19 empty. Is it part of the 2nd (and 3rd) volta?

The best way to explain what you want is something like this:
1. Play measures 1 - 10
2. Play measures 1 - 9
3. Skip over measure 10
4. Play measures 11 - 19
5. Play measure 11 - 18
6. Jump to measure 6, skipping over measure 10, and play to end of measure 17
7. Jump to measure 20 and play until end...

I'm not quite sure what you are asking when you write...
so the first time the score doesn't go straight to the coda.

Normally the score doesn't go straight to the coda on the first time. It plays from the beginning, passes the Segno symbol (the first time) continues to the D.S. whereupon it jumps to the Segno symbol and plays (a second time) up to the To Coda. Playback then continues at the Coda symbol.

Please attach a sample score with a clear explanation of the various sections and in what order (and how often) you want them played.

Edit:
I took the score example posted by Shoichi (ciao - hope it's ok)) and put in a Coda to illustrate:
Measures 6 to 8 are played twice, so the coda is jumped to only after 6 to 8 is played a second time.
(Thus, the score doesn't go straight to the coda when played the first time.)

Regards to all.
