How to enter rit. or rall. or even cresc. or such directions in usual places?
I am not sure how to do this. These are not part of the pallette and possibly this is obvious but however, how do I enter above items such as rit or rall or other similar directions above the stave where they usually go? I suppose they are text but not sure how to achieve? Thanks

Basically it was control T and select 'italics' at bottom of left hand corner then enter words and esc
rit. and rall. are basically tempo markings, so I think the most natural way is to enter them as such. So create / text / tempo, then type rit. or rall. in place of one of the existing markings.
As for cresscendo, that's already in the palette, so just enter it, then double click it n the scote to edit it down to cresc. Do that nce and then you can copy and paste it elsewhere. For 2.0, it should be possible to add this or any other custom markng to the palette.
I definitely do *not* recommend trying the using ctrl-K (chord symbol) for this, since these are treated very differently by MuseScore.

I believe someone told me to use ctrl-T and was able to use this, even could put into italics! So that worked.
Did not know you could use create/text/tempo and alter by typing in place of existing markings, as you suggest? I thought you had to use what was there?

Definitely can enter whatever text you want. You can edit a predefined marking right in the dialog, thus making it available the next time you go apto add a tempo marking, or you can edit it after placing it in your score, which makes it asier to add things like the quarter notes symbol from the F2 symbols palette so you can have "quarternote = 120”, etc. and to set the font if you want it different from "regular" tempo markings.
Staff Text Ctrl T is not good beause the marking will have no chance of ever playing back if playback of rit and rall is ever implemented, and also because for scores of multiple parts, Staff Text will only be attached to the top part when the individual parts are generated. System Text would be better as far as that goes, but again, it rules out the possibility of playback. So it really is best to use Tempo Text.

Thanks that makes sense now. I had put in staff text and it looked good but the play back was not influenced by using staff text 'cresc' for example. From what you say I should use the system text, then edit it down so it is abbreviated and, that way, the playback will then recognise. Hope I got that right.

No, I was talking about *tempo*. You need to use tempo text text if you want it to affect tempo. *Currently*, rit and rall don't affect tempo even when entered this way, but assuming a future release of MuseScore adds that support
As for cresc, that's not tempo, that's dynamics. So you don't use tempo or staff text - you use dynamics. Crescendo is already there on the palette; all you have to do is edit the marking as I explained above. This too is not supported for playback *yet* but will be in the future, so you might as well enter the marking correctly now. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Ok I was getting a bit confused. I since noticed that 'crescendo' or 'diminuendo' entered made no difference to playback whether dragged from dynamics or entered by way of text. Sorry.
So it makes no difference whether entered as long form or abbreviated. Thanks
