Performance Notes
I would like to add performance notes to a score I am writing in order to explain some unorthodox choices I made to anyone conducting it in the future. Is there any way to create a text box that isn't attached to the heading or the system?

No, But you can increase the size of the text box so it takes up it's own page.
Not quite clear where you want it to appear, maybe if you described in more detail the desired appearance, we could explain how to achieve it. Text has to be attached to *something* or MuseScore won't know where to display it.
I would also like to do this. I want to explain some of the theory behind the transcription I've done, etc. As such, it's about the song as a whole, and therefore has no logical note or rest which is safe to anchor to.
One could argue that I could still pick an arbitrary note to anchor to and then move the performance notes all the way to the end where I want them to appear. But I often delete small sections of notes/rests if they need correcting. My concern is that by doing so, all the performance notes will get deleted inadvertently, and I might not even see they are deleted since they might not be nearby.
You could say that I want them to be anchored to the END of the score, not to any notes or rests IN the score. This reminds me of a Perl regex concept called "word boundary" (\w). It's not the word or any character in it. It's the edge of the word. And you can anchor to it.
Thoughts?

Frames are not anchored to notes. To be technical, MuseScore sees them as special types of measures. So when you insert or append a text, horizontal or vertical frame, they are placed at a specific point in the music, between measures. The frames can be easily resized (yes I said easily in spite of a recent related discussion) to "fit" any text or picture you put in them. If you want text at the end of the score rather than some other point, use the menu Add->Frames->Append... (the appropriate frame). Right click inside the frame and select paste and it will now be in that frame.

Exactly - frames are what you want. And text frames don't even need to be resized - they size themselves automatically. So just append a text frame, add your text, and you're done.

Perfect! Thanks, gents! You learn something new every day!
MuseScore is not only such an amazing product, but the support community and documentation is exemplary in the industry. I'm proud to be a part of it in any way I can.
Thanks again!

Except that they show up in both score & parts, right?

True. For notes that one wishes to show in the score only, you can make them invisible in the parts. It might be more useful in that case to add them as staff text so the frames themselves don't interfere with layout in the parts.

I would like to have a block of text after the last system on page 1 of the score. It basically says "Player 3 is optional, its notes can be covered by player 2". I don't think a staff text would give me such a block, and a system text goes over a system, not under it. Hah! I made a system text and then dragged it down. That only creates a shitload of white space between voice 1 and 2.

Don't drag, that's not the way to do it - MuseScore will try to allocate enough space to do what dragging is normally used for rather than what you are attempting to sue it for instead. Don't use system text either, that will make it appear on all parts. Use staff text, and attach it to the bottom staff. Then simply press "X" instead of dragging to flip it below the staff (or use the "Flip direction" button on the toolbar).

I'll remember the X trick. But this will put the performance note also in the part. I tried emptying it there (which works with text blocks, as you once suggested to me in the past) but that empties it in the score too.

Don't empty it; mark it invisible (with "V").

"Then simply press "X" instead of dragging to flip it below the staff"
Wow, really?? Cool! I had no idea about this. I often drag below the staff (and never like doing it). Thanks for the tip!

You’re welcome! For the record, the “X” shortcut does the same thing as the “flip direction” button on the toolbar and works for pretty much any element for which it makes sense. It flips stems, tuplet brackets, text, articulations, lines, etc.

Nice. I knew about stems and noteheads. I will have to keep this in mind!
