Soundfont Switching Possibilty

• Jun 29, 2017 - 18:27

There is one thing MuseScore should add on the version of MuseScore 3.0!
It is the possibility to switch the soundfont of an instrument in the music. Like so, we could for example use a soft flute at the beginning and suddenly, at a measure, to change the soundfont to have another type of flute like staccato or anything else. It must be very very convenient and it spare you to add some hidden instruments just to make a little part in a music (and then instrument deleted for the printed version).

What I purpose is something like a vignette where you have right-clicked on the instrument, displaying the soundfont you chose at this point. For example you a vignette called "Staccato Horn" which refers to one of the soundfont we have in our list.

And this could be the same for the Zeberus files.

I really hope that MuseScore will make a thing like that, they already do very nice job!

This is possible in version 2.1. You can insert an instrument change text, this will create a new line in the mixer where you can change the soundfont used for that section. To help you keep track, every time you enter an instrument change, a new Mixer line is created. This helps you keep track of which mixer line goes with which instrument change. You can make the text invisible as with almost everything else.

But FWIW, you don't need to switch soundfonts just to get staccato. The regular staccato dots already shorten notes on playback with any soundfont. But sure, if you have a specialty soundfont that includes separate samples for staccato notes, you can use Instrument Change text to switch to it any time you like. You could also create a custom instruments.xml and access these sounds as separate channels via staff text if you do a lot of this sort of heavy duty customization.
