This is called a "crash". They happen from time to time :-(. Little that can be done about it unless you can come up with an exact series of steps that reliably leads to this - then the developers can reproduce it, see why it happens, and fix it (assuming it isn't already fixed in the next version).

Never a bad idea. But do note MuseScore normally auto-saves a copy of your score for you pretty often (default is every 2 minutes, I think). Next time you start MuseScore, it should notice it did not shut down correctly, and offer to restore your score. This usually works very well. Every once in a while the crash might happen in the middle of writing the autosave file, I guess, in which case this won't work. MuseScore also normally makes a backup copy when you first open a file, so you can easily get back to the state a score was in when you started your most recent editing session by finding a copy of the score (in your current directory) with a period at the beginning and comma at the end.
