How to insert "x" empty bars?

Sorry if this has been asked before, or if it's in the handbook but I can't seem to find an answer anywhere. I play oboe, and in band, there isn't an oboe part for the current piece we're doing, so I've been given a flute piece and just been told to take it down the octave. More to the point, there's a point in the piece where I don't play for 6 bars, and I'm not sure how write this in, so far I've just got 6 bars with semibreve rests in them. Any help is appreciated, thank you :)
