exporting

Can you tell me how to export a file into something like Microsoft Word, or Paint? I had thought that if I saved it as PNG bitmap graphic it would open in Paint. But when I open it in Paint all I get is solid black. I've tried a few suggested formats (suggested in the manual under "exporting" so as to open in Microsoft Word, or to insert into a Word document, but only gibberish characters come out.
