Voltas setting number of repeats

• Dec 13, 2017 - 17:04

I'm having trouble setting repeats in this organ/chorus score. (Please see attachment.) First, MS skips the preceding measure to the repeat measure on the repeats! Second, how can I get the 3rd playback (repeat) to go on Volta 2 for the final ending of the piece?? (I studied the Handbook on repeats/voltas.) Thanks. Happy Season to All! Del P.S. Please see the corrected file showing volta 1 as it should be. Sorry . What I want is , on the 2nd measure preceding volta 1, after the third repeat, I want MS to go to volta 2 for the end of the piece. (skip over the little 2-bar organ ditty)

This is because of the volta 1, if you want that measure played twice, remove the volta 1 (and volta 2 is not needed at all)
Or do you want volta 2 being played in the 3rd round (if so: where are the 3rd set of lyrics?)? So it actually is a volta 3, and you need to change play count of the measure containing the :| barline to 3 and change volta 1 to be a volta 1+2

Actually, I messed up on this question: Volta 1 should extend to the previous measure also. (2 measures total.) Yes, there is a third verse, just haven't got it typed in yet. So I DID set playback for 3 times under measure properites, repeat number. On the third repeat, I want it to skip Volta 1 and go to volta 2 for the closing bar of the piece. So maybe there should be a 3rd volta at the" skip to" measure? I studied the info and setting 1,2,3 etc. in the handbook, and various more complex ways of setting these, but don't know how it applies in this case? How could I do this, or can I? Thanks

Yes indeed!
Look at the SATB notes. Third verse ends at measure 17.
Also... it seems to me that measure 17 should end on an E major chord, judging by the G sharp in the organ treble clef. Consequently, the tenor should sing a G sharp to avoid dissonant ambiguity (or the organ should play a G natural as in measure 14).

Regards.

I did reset the voltas just as you have them, but it will not work on my score. measures get skipped and even played simultaneously. Your attachment works fine, so does jm6stringers. I hope I can download one and use it for my score. Trouble is, it should have worked on my sore when I reset stuff. Puzzled.

You have 3 verses, so the first ending returns to the start repeat barline, after which the second and third verses are sung. Then the third verse ends at measure 17, and then on to the final section. (Look at the third voice lyric placeholders I added in the attachment.)
Be advised...
Measures 14 and 17 are identical in the SATB parts, the only difference is the organ accompaniment. So... the third verse finishes on the third ending along with the (slightly) different organ accompaniment at measure 17.
Also, at end of measure 17 the organ plays an E major chord (has a G sharp note). The tenor voice should show a G sharp too, otherwise it's dissonantly ambiguous. Should be an E minor chord as in measure 14, and then a "new" tonality of an E major chord in measure 17, yes?

Regards.

Yes indeed. This score is still being worked on. The tenors do need a g sharp--I fixed it. Although I often do bi-tonality and bi-chordal constructions, in this case I did not want a g natural with a g sharp!
Mainly, I'm just trying to figure out how to get the 3rd repeat to go to the end--the volta 2. I could just put in an "AL Fine" at the point where the third verse ends, but doubt if MS would play it back that way. The Choral conductor would know what to do.

Hey, I just played through your attachment--you have it doing just what I wanted! But I don't know how you did it. I don't know what a lyric place holder is? Either I have to fix my score, or be able to use your attachment. Maybe download it? Thanks! I appreciate your trouble. Are lyric placeholders in the Handbook? I've never heard of them.

I downloaded your attachment and am using it for my score. It works perfectly. Thanks. Only thing is, I don't know how you did it. I reset my voltas, etc. in my original version and it did NOT work for me. Don't know why. Some error or bug somewhere.

Hey, you identified the problem! I was using the moue to extend voltas. I did study the voltas part of the Handbook again. On the other version of this score, which is just for solo voice and piano, I successfully set everything right and it works perfectly. Thank You

Regarding lyric placeholders...
Your original post showed only 2 verses and yet you wanted a 3rd repeat. That was cleared up when you later wrote: there is a third verse, just haven't got it typed in yet.

So... with that new information, I adjusted your Carol Choral SATB.mscz and attached my revised Carol Choral SATB2.mscz which displays text entered into the third verse. As I did not know the "actual" text for the third verse, I simply entered words such as "Third verse", "third verse end" as text placeholders to illustrate the volta playback behavior - and where the "third verse end" should be entered into the volta.
Presumably you would then overwrite those words with the actual lyrics rather than sing "Third verse", "third verse end" during performance. In that regard, those words may be considered lyric placeholders, substituting for the "actual" lyrics. As such, the topic lyric placeholder is not something that would appear (or be needed) in the handbook.

Regards.
