Oh so newbie! How do I permanently change fingering from above the staff to below?

WOW! As a retired professional software developer I appreciate both the amount and quality of the effort required to develop such a magnificent application. And for free? Amazing. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I am completely new to Musescore. And a real beginner at much of the terminology. At 72 I am trying to regain some ability to amuse myself on the Yamaha Keyboard (Electone HX-1). I will never be anything more that a terrible beginner in private but in one of my other lives it gave me pleasure and I'd like to get back there.

I am using Musescore initially to score exercises and some simple old favorite songs. In particular I want to show both the note name and the fingering. By default both appear above the staff, overwriting each other. I found out how to move the fingering below the staff. I like it. But I can't get the change to stick permanently. I have to reapply it every time I insert a fingering. Can someone tell me how to change the default/preferences/personal settings to always put the fingering below the staff?

And if you are in the mood, is there a way to set up default fingering (Middle C is always 1, E above middle C is always 3, etc) so that I can apply it to a new score and then make only the fingering changes from the default rather than applying the fingering note by note?

Thanks,

Tom

To move all fingerings in a score, right click any fingering and chose Text Style... You can set the vertical offset to something in the range of 5-7 and it should make them below the staff and avoid most notes. All of the fingerings will be moved by that amount down, so any you have already changed will need to be fixed.

Realistically, though, I'd suggest leaving fingerings alone and moving the note names instead. There is no standard place for note names, but there is for fingering, so might as well leave the fingerings in their correct standard place. Plus, the algorithm for placing fingerings is pretty complex and probably won't work well in all cases if you try tricking it by messing with the text style settings.

So I'd recommend moving the notes names by right clicking one, Select / All Similar Elements, then using the Inspector. Or right click one, Text Style, and change the default position there.

If you need further help, please attach your score as we can see for ourselves what is going on and give better advice.
