I am using the cable that works and my key board does not input any notes into the score and i have been through the tutorials and i can find nothing.

Question 1 would be are you able to use that midi keyboard with some other program?
Question 2 is what OS are you on, and what sound system are you using (under Edit->Preferences->I/O)
Question 3 is are you sure you have the Toggle Midi Input' button depressed? It is located at middle of top of musescore's window and looks like an old MIDI DIN-5 connetor.
