Notenames and appropriate octaves

• Apr 2, 2018 - 02:38

I teach a lot of kids traditional music. As its an ancient genre, part of the artistry is in passing tunes down 'by ear' as such many of the kids i teach struggle to read written music properly, and moving them on to it tends to work better in stages, first reading notes in A, B, C e.t.c. and then working towards notation.

For this the 'Notenames' plugin in excellent, but one thing i'm wondering is there any way to add the specific octave to the notes E.g. for the notes in the octave lower than and including Middle C having a comma after them e.g: C, B, A, G, e.t.c for the octave immediately above middle C to just be standard with no addition, and for the octave above C5 to include an apostrophe, e.g.: D' E' F' G' A' B' e.t.c.

It may sound pernickety, but if there was such a way to programme this once and it then does it automatically, it would sure save me a LOT of time!!

Many thanks for anyone who can help in advance!

Open notenames.qml either some plain text editor, there is a commented out line for adding the octave, uncomment and have the numeric octave.
From there you could go further and add , or ' as needed.

Ironic, I'm a Suzuki student who learned violin by ear and then started to learn how to noteread after a year of learning. I created a system to learn how to noteread music (in 5 stages ) that distinguished octaves using shapes and colors rather than , and ' symbols to distinguish octaves... That's a neat idea. I have piano and violin notereading lessons using shapes and colors on youtube and have a link to it on my profile if interested if that helps.... not sure if you teach Suzuki but I incorporated Suzuki songs in the violin notereading lessons
