Thank you for your very prompt reply and please accept my apologies for the trouble I've put you to.
I find it difficult to believe and embarrassed to note, that despite having tha handbook, I had previously overlooked the subject "Staves" in the Index and the reference to "Layout" to be found on page 334 and further to see that on that page is the sub heading "Setting the default distance between Staves!"
None so blind as those who refuse to see!

I like using the search feature in my PDF viewer to look for key words like staves.
