Symphony orchestra percussion help needed

• Apr 29, 2018 - 05:33

I am working on a large orchestral score that requires a crash cymbal, a triangle, and a tambourine. They are never played simultaneously and have been designed to be played by one percussionist. For space saving I would like them to be written on the line of a single line percussion staff. I should be able to do this using the INSTRUMENT text dialogue for each change but for some reason I can't get a decent tambourine sound and even the triangle sounds more like a ship's bell. I am very much an IT dinosaur so it could well be something I have done/am doing wrong somewhere.
I have searched the forum, the FAQs and the common issues section but can find nothing that actually works on my set up.
I am running Ver 2.2.1, revision 51b8386 on a Windows 10 laptop.

Keeping the 'Change Instrument' indication as text tries to use: Style/General.../Score->Hide empty staves.
(I think there's a typo in the Percussion Instruments name)

I would suggest a side test. Create this in a separate score.

Create a percussion staff with the various instruments using the instrument text and notes entered for each., and remove the check from drumset from each instrument. Doing this may greatly affect hoe and if you can enter notes. Now search through the sounds for instruments not in the drum set but in the various soundfonts you have loaded. There are many to choose from. You can then look through the various sondfonts for one you like. One I've seen used a lot on MuseScore.com is called TOUHOU + DRUMKIT. I don't remember where I got it. Probably someone posted a link to it on MuseScore.com. You may even be able to keep drum kit checked with this soundfont installed.
