Automatic separation into voices

• Jun 14, 2018 - 20:42

Hi, gang!!!

I use MuseScore 2.2.1 rev. 51b8386 into UbuntuStudio (Linux) 18.04 LTS.

Is there some kind to get automatic separation into voices when we have an staff with more than one note per time???

Blessings & Greetings from Chile!!!

Not sure, whats your aim. During the note input you have to select the correct voice before you add the note.

For chords in an existing score, you could use the explode tool, exchanging the voice of the notes, and (by using the the selection filter) copy them again back into the first staff.

As usual it's better to give suggestions with an attached example.

Hi, kuwitt!!

I don't think it is absolutely necessary some specific example in this case.

Just, think about an staff with two notes per time (let's say two clarinets). It was written that way, so both notes appeared as voice 1.

My question is... How to automatically separate them into voice 1 and voice 2, into the same staff???

I know about these ways of proceeding:

  • if it's a short piece, select the notes you want change into another voice with "ctrl" an change the voice
  • if it's a longer piece, add a staff, select all measures of both staffs, use the explode tool (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/tools#explode), select the notes of the second staff and change the voice, open the selection filter and deselect the voice of the first staff, select the notes of the second staff and copy them to the first staff.

There is no single command to do exactly that, but it is possible to get this result without too much work. To be more specific regarding the suggestion above:

1) add a temporary "scratch" staff below the one you want separated
2) select the music you want separated
3) Edit / Tools / Explode
4) select the resulting music on the scratch staff
5) Edit / Voices / Exchange Voice 1-2
6) Selection Filter, deselect Voice 1
7) Copy
8) Selection Filter, select Voice 1
9) Click original staff
10) Paste

If it's just a measure, might be easier to just move the notes one at a time by clicking the voice buttons, but if you've got a whole symphony, spending the 20 seconds it takes to do this would be well worth it.
