Musescore having issues after installing Musescore Drumline

• Jul 11, 2018 - 00:00

I'm very excited that Musescore finally has the Musescore Drumline extension and that it has added many new features to Musescore. My problems with it however is that after installing the extension, Musescore now takes way longer than usual to start up, playback sometimes slows down (really only when there are a ton of rolls playing but that may just be expected), and Musescore crashes on occasion. I'm not sure what causes the last one to happen, but the other two might be a hardware issue. I do know that I meet the recommended (not minimum) requirements in order to run MDL.

Here is a list of what I have on my device:
Processor: Intel Atom x5-Z8500 CPU @ 1.44GhHz
Installed Ram: 4GB
OS: Windows 10 Pro Education Version 1803
System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Musescore information:
Musescore Version: 2.3.1 Revison: 899e9d API-Level: 206

I was told that my RAM was definitely good enough for MDL but I'm not sure about my processor. Could that be what's slowing down my Musescore?

It's normal for startup to be much slower on account of the soundfonts. It's over a minute for me on a rather faster machine. But in general, playback should be "OK" with your hardware. 4GB is what I have to, that's not an issue. The "Atom" processor is definitely a limiter though. Shouldn't lead to crashes, though. If you experience one that is reproducible - eg, following same steps on same score always crashes - please let us know, and attach the score and describe the steps.

I have three PCs on which Musescore 2.3.1 has now been installed. On two it is is fine, without Drumline installed. But my main usage is on an Intel Stick PC on my piano as a score display system. I too tried installing the Drumline extension on this lower powered Windows 10 PC. The load time was over 4 minutes and then appeared to have got stuck. I reverted to the 2.2.1 version, which worked, but every time I reinstalled version 2.3.1 it got stuck. I noticed that the CPU load was reaching 100% a lot of the time whilst it was trying to load and the disc space was steadily increasing. It looks like there might be a memory leak problem. By clearing all registry entries, I have finally got (after 4 minutes loading time) version 2.3.1 to load. Immediately I did, I uninstalled the Drumline extension. Now Musescore 2.3.1 loads much quicker, more like the version 2.2.1.

I appreciate that the drum soundfonts are extensive and therefore take time to load but the software extension seems to be too much of a resource hog for me to continue to try it out.

Perhaps you could look at why this is, please? In the meantime, I am happy with new version 2.3.1 without the extension installed.
