How do I make a measure with two and a half beats (half note and quarter note) in a piece with a 4/4 time signature?
In measure operations there doesn't appear to be a way to make an irregular measure with a half note and quarter note in 4/4 time. Thank you for your help.

If the time signature is 3/4 doesn't that mean 3 beats are required? A half note and a quarter note are 2 and a half beats, I think. So what am I missing. I tried changing the measure to 3/4 time. Sorry to bother you with my ignorance and thank you for helping.

3/4 means three quarter notes per measure, with the beat being a quarter note. A half note is 2 quarter notes. So a half note and a quarter note are 3 beats in 3/4 and so they are filling the measure nicely.

If you want 2 1/2 beat, that is 5/8. E.g. a half note and an eighth. One beat is a quarter note/rest.

That was what I was looking for. What I meant to write was a half note and an eighth note - 2 and a half beats. Thank you. May I ask you to elaborate on the correlation between 2 and a half beats and 5/8 time signature? Thank you.

One beat is 1/4, so half a beat is 1/8, add half a note, which is 2 beats or 2/4, makes it 2/4 + 1/8, which is 5/8

Is this is pickup measure? Or is there some other special uusual reason you want to do this? it would normally be incorrect notation unless it is a pickup measure. but indeed, it is simple math: a half note is 2 beats, which is 4/8, and and eighth is 1/8. Add them up, that's 5/8.
