I am trying to add lyrics to this piece I'm working on, but when I do they sort of lay above the accompaniment. Is there any way to possibly change the distance between the vocal line and the accompaniment line so that doesn't happen?

As mentioned, this should happen to some extent by default, but if the accompaniment staff has many notes on ledger lines above it, or chord symbols or other elements well above the staff, there could still be conflicts. In which case, you can use "Extra distance above staff" in "Staff Properties" for the accompaniment to add space score-wide, or a spacer the Breaks & Spacers palette to add it for just a given system.

If you need further assistance, then attaching your score would help indeed.

The vast majority of what you read hear is hidden somewhere in the handbook, you just need to know where to find it and, at times, how to put several items together. The cases where the explanation does not exist in the handbook are extremely rare and are usually fixed when found.
