change note stem direction

• Sep 30, 2018 - 02:38
  1. Importing midi clarinet quartet. Key signature imports correctly but all notes are a full step to high.
  2. Changing key signature: Click on 3 flat signature it adds only 1 flat to staff.
  3. 3rd clarinet part is imported one octave higher than the original.
  4. How to select only 3rd staff of a 4 staff score?

  1. Since you are talking about a clarinet, it sounds like you are looking at the score in concert pitch. There is a button under the main menu that says "Concert Pitch." If it looks pressed, click it to view the score in transposed pitch.

  2. See 1. It REALLY sounds like you are looking at the score in concert pitch. Concert E-flat is the key of F on the clarinet.

3.&4. select the first measure then press ctrl+shift+end to select to the end of the staff. You can then press ctrl+down arrow to move all notes down an octave.

I am guessing you might not be familiar with the fact that clarinets are transposing instruments abd by their nature always sound a step lower than written. See for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transposing_instrument. That is why the notes are displaying a step higher than they sound - this is entirely correct for how a clarinet would need to read the part. If you would prefer to display the score at sounding pitch instead while you work on it, simply press the "Concert pitch" button.

I'd further guess the 3rd clarinet part is for bass clarinet, which sounds an additional octave lower and hence is written an additional octave higher. Either that or an octave clef was used. You would need to attach your MIDI file here in order for us to understand better.

As for selecting the 3rd staff, see the previous response, but note that is how to select the contents of the staff. Depending on what it is you are actually trying to do, that might not be what you want. For instance, you wouldn't want to do that in order to change the clef, or change the transposition.

BTW, your thread title mentions note stems, did you have a question about those as well? Normally MuseScore sets those correctly according to standard engraving practice, but if you have some special need to override this, press "X" to flip the stem direction of a note (same shortcut also works for some other markings like articulations etc).
