Is there a way to drag the mouse and create a selection box to select notes with? (Musescore)

It would help a lot with selecting specific notes. I've been using ctrl click, shift click, selecting measures, etc. but being able to drag a selection box with the mouse would still help a lot with what I do often.

Shift+drag is specifically for creating range selections, which by definition include everything from some given start point to some given end point. If you need to select individual notes within a range, Ctrl+click is a good way. Also depending on what you are trying to do, selecting a range and then using right-click, Select / More to select notes of a specific pitch or whatever. Or even using Edit / Tools / Explode, if that is what you are really trying to do. If you explain your actual goal, we can help you find the most efficient way of accomplishing it.

Thanks for the information! I'm learning a lot! What I am trying to do is to select everything that I want to play on my instrument and delete it, which is usually the melody/top notes. I can take me awhile to ctrl click through the entire piece sometimes, so I was wondering if there was a more efficient way to do it.

So I guess you are taking music written for piano or some other instrument that uses, chords, and you trying to isolate the top note for use with some Instrument that cannot play chords? If so, forget about selecting notes individually and use Explode. See the Handbook under Tools for more info. But basically, add a few dummy staves below the staff containing the chords, select the whole piece, and run Edit / Tools / Explode. The notes of the chords will be split out leaving the top staff with just the melody.
