Gonzales Problem: Duplets with Grace Notes, Acciaccatura, Appoggiatura

• Dec 5, 2018 - 21:36

Hi Folks,
This is a challenging piece by Chilly Gonzales title "Meisched" that I'm attempting to rearrange because my hands are smaller than his. I also like engraving a piece while I'm learning it as it exposes some of the nuances like voicing....and it teaches me MuseScore.
My problem hits in the third bar. He's using Appoggiatura or Acciaccatura grace notes AND a duplet! It's causing an extra 1/8 rest at the end of the bar which is throw off my midi timing in the bass clef. Have a look. I could probably play around it but MuseScore should be able to score this is my belief. When I use the duplet function, Muse Score puts in a few rests between the notes. Ugh. I end up with a mess each time. I've tried fooling it a number of times with no luck.

Hoping someone with more experience than me can look at this, try to reproduce it and find a work-a-round. I've included my work and the original score.
I'm a new MuseScore user (after runny screaming from Notion 6, again). Screen grabs attached. Thx. ~m

There is no duplet bracket in the original, but what he must have done is

The bottom staff shows what the note pattern was before creating the duplet. One of the clues that tells me this is how the notes line up with the bass staff. The fingerings make it even more difficult to understand. The second 2 is a fingering not a duplet.

I've never heard of this piece of music before. I created the picture using MuseScore 3.0. I put the rests in the second staff as a gauge so you could see the rhythms used in the score you posted. That was the only thing that made sense to me. I actually tried a couple of things before I thought about the beats in the treble lining up with the beats in the bass (though I know this is what you should always expect).

How do the appoggiatura fit?

I'm not sure I understand the question. If you look at the picture, you will see they are placed before the main notes as is expected in printed scores. If you're trying to understand how to enter them, see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/grace-notes.

No problems.

Their not the prettiest, but that can be fixed by editing the grace note beams. I tried several methods for entering the grace notes and they worked every time.

This leads me to believe you are not understanding something, but I'm not sure what. I'm more than happy to help you. I suggest that you read https://musescore.org/en/handbook/tuplets and https://musescore.org/en/handbook/grace-notes to see if they help you any.
