How to add a part?

• Dec 7, 2018 - 08:45

Please could someone kindly help me to get going on Musescore, it's baffling. I thought I'd try scoring a simple duet, Cornet and Eb horn (the flat symbol doesn't work in any text box so you can't type it into part titles). Musescore doesn't admit the existence of Horns in Eb which is annoying straight away but there we go. I have carefully written my horn part and it looks great and it was easy to do, all good so far, but now HOW DO I ADD MY CORNET PART?
I followed the instructions in the help carefully but nothing much happens.
I go to File - parts and click on New but it only offer me piano as a single option and it doesn't admit that the Horn part I have spent hours writing even exists. So I select 'piano' and type Horn Eb into the title and I do get a new part which is a duplicate of my horn part (but the page set up is wrong and it's not a piano part, it's just treble clef so why is it even called 'piano'?) and it has the words Horn Eb (which I typed in) superimposed on top of the word Piano in the top left corner. However I can't see my original horn part in the list of parts (and its title has an asterisk after it, I can't work out what that means).
Please, what on earth is going on? How exactly do I now add my cornet part? Many thanks indeed.

yoiu don't want to add a (linked) part (not yet at least), but an instrument, so just press I, then add Cornet.
And I have the suspicion you just started with the treble clef template, which is Piano, rather than an empty score and adding en Eb Horn, so for that you need to change the instrument, right-click in the staff, staff properties, change instrument. This will change transpositioning too...

AAArggghh, no!!! I went to 'Instrument' and it was a complete nightmare. Added the word 'piano' to every line which I then couldn't get rid of, np way of deleting this, would lost all my work if I hadn't saved a backup!!
Thanks but I don't get how I can change instrument to Eb horn when Eb horn is not in the list --? That's why I had to start with piano. If Musescore doesn't admit that Eb horns exist what else can I choose? Thanks again for replying.

Enter "horn" into the search field. Horn in Eb is there, ist is just nopt in Common Instruments.
As son as you have more that instrument by default the instrumentnames are shown. If you don't want them, go to staff properties and remove them there. The fact that it shows Piano confirms my suspicion from above

Thank you, I'll try that and see if I can make some progress. It must be possible just to write a simple duet with two treble clef parts. To be honest I don't care what the instruments are, I just need two simple treble clef sheets. Thanks again. I'm not optimistic, it seems incredibly hard :(

It is incredibly easy: new score, empty template, add instruments dialog, search horn, add, search cornet, add, OK, start entering notes.

If you want horn, don't start with piano, esp. not here with transposing instruments

To not lose what you already did: attach the score here and I'll try to fix it for you

Thanks but, no, it's incredibly hard. I have had to completely give up all my work and start a new score from scratch. So I select the 'choose instruments' template and choose Horn Eb and Cornet Bb. It asks me for a key so I select Bb major (two flats) which is the key for my horn part. It produces a score in which the Horn is in G (one sharp) and the Cornet is in C!! I want my horn part in Bb not G!!! I try to select two flats but it won't do it. All I want is two to write simple parts in treble clef, but in different keys. Ha ha, it must be possible! ;) Thanks for your kind help, I really appreciate it.

What? I KNOW what key I want my horn part in, two flats. That is the correct key sig. How do I tell Musecore please? It won't let me specify my key or change my key, it's driving me crazy. The cornet part should have three flats, obviously, but it just won't do it.

I try and try to drag two flats onto my horn part but it changes it to one sharp!!! I WANT TWO FLATS!!!
I could write these parts by hand in ten minutes! (but players complain they can't read my writing! ;) )

Well, not if you play along with any other instrument that is non-transposing or transposed differently (like here the Bb Cornet and the Eb Horn)
Then again there's the concert pitch button to the rescue?
There are brass band templates, why not using those as a start?

Wow, amazingly now I have a score with two staves and two instruments in the correct key signatures. Now all I have to work out is how to print the two parts separately, and to alter the setup so that each part prints on one single page of A4. Right now I can't work out how to see my separate parts, but I guess it must be possible. Coffee may help ;) Thanks again for your great advice.
