In the menu Style->General...->Page, increase the Lyrics below margin to affect all staves, or use a spacer from the Breaks and spacers palette for one or a few staves.

Thanks Mike that did it. but perhaps it would be better if I could get the note stems to go upwards rather than down especially when there are tied notes eg two or three quavers in a row any ideas?

I would need to see the score, or at least a picture of the problem should be enough in this case. I may be imagining a different layout than you are describing.
