how to add lyrics above the stave? in the old muse score, you could just drag the lyrics to the note. Muse score 3 won't let me do that.

Use the inspector and change the placement to above.
Setting placement to Above is indeed the best way. but for the record, for the cases where you want to drag something way out of its normal position to the point where it crosses other elements, you can still do this, you will just need to disable Autopalce for the element in question (also in Inspector).
