how to enable headphones in playback
When I was trying to listen to playback with headphones, music still comes from the laptop speakers. I want to use headphones so the music would not bother others in my household. Help anyone?

Go to Edit/Preferences and select the I/O device.
Try to plug in your earphones before starting MuseScore.

I had the same problem and you were exactly correct. I closed MuseScore completely; then plugged my earphones into the jack; then checked "preferences-sound-output" to make sure that my headphone jack was selected for the output; then turned on a radio station on Safari and got the music through my headphones; and only then reopened MuseScore and played the score and magically the sound came through the headphones as you suggested it would.

Or go to Preferences and press "Restart Audio and MIDI devices".

Thanks, this worked.

I wish somebody knew how to find and hook the proper operating system signals (hopefully Qt allows this) that this bug could be fixed. I, for one, don't).

Hi,
Yes this works, but only up to a point. If, for any reason one unplugs the head phones to move the lap top or leave it standing for a while, then it is necessary to close all MuseScore files, close down the app, reopen it and select the the scores and then only will it play again - after a few second hesitation. This is very inconvenient. Previously, before I had this problem the headphones simply worked instantly no matter what.

Really? No one has ever reported this ("Restart Audio and MIDI") failing before. You can get all the scores back automatically by choosing Program Start / continue last session in "Preferences".

My point is that yes, Restart Audio and MIDI dose not fail, but that I have to select it every time I need to remove the headphones and then put them back in the jack or there is a long break in use. It was never like this.

Did you try pressing the MIDI-Plug button twice? It's a lot easier. Yes, it's a bug, and no one knows exactly how to fix it right now.

Update: Just downloaded version 3.4.1 (upgraded from 3.3.something) and the headphone jack bug is still present. The only way I can get output to the headphone jack is to exit Musescore, plug in the headphone jack, count to 5, then start Musescore. Occasionally, even that doesn't work.

No one has claimed that it's been fixed. Did you read above? Did you click twice on the midi plug icon? Works every time for me.

Works for me too.

The previous info on this thread was three weeks old. Just verifying for myself that nothing had changed in the meantime.
By "MIDI plug icon" are you referring to the 'Toggle MIDI Input' button on the top toolbar?

None other! The day a few weeks ago I discovered that this works was a great one; it was not known to be so until then, nor designed to serve so. It's a very simple work-around to a difficult problem.
I guess we'd better turn the information in this thread into a HowTo and/or FAQ, any takers?
just updated to 3.6.2
cannot get anything to play
ive gone through the steps above
neither speakers of mac nor external headset will work
any suggestions?
