Chord symbols have spacing issues in musecore 3

• Feb 12, 2019 - 02:21

In musescore 3, my chord symbols for some reason have very odd spacings. If I import a musescore 2 files the spacing is normal, but when I create new chord symbols in Musescore 3 there are large gaps in the text. They don't appear that way when typing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've tried changing fonts, font size, chord symbol style (alternate), and turning off staff space and auto placement

In order to understand and assist better, we'd need you to attach the actual score, not just pictures. As it is, my best guess is that you are simply using a font with very strange properties. Either that or you are trying to use a custom chord description file that contains errors.

Well, as I was trying to suggest, some fonts are better designed than others in terms of how they space things. You are using something that is either missing the flat sign entirely or else it defines one with way to much space around it. Switch to a font that is better designed to work for chord symbols, like the ones included with MuseScore (eg, FreeSerif, FreeeSans, or MuseJazz).

Another issue I see in your screenshot is the composer text is extending way outside the title bix. That doesn't happen when I load your score. So again, it seems you have changed something, but it isn't clear what. Or else something is very messed up on your system, although I am not sure what it could be. What OS are you using?

I took the screenshot and then tested a couple more fonts before uploading the file. Sorry, I can see why that was misleading. I assure you that the one I uploaded is the same file I'm having trouble with. The chord symbols look like this on all my MuseScore 3 files. It's bizarre that they look fine for you.

Can you please upload the file in the exact state as when you are seeing a problem, then? Also, verify that you don't have any of these fonts installed on your systems - MuseScore needs be free to use its own internal version. If you have a customized or older version installed, that could be the problem right there.

Can you explain your specific issue in more detail, ideally by attaching a sample score illustrating the problem> Then we can advise you as to how to proceed. By default, chord symbols should be spaced very naturally except in a few corner case situations where a long chord symbol at the very end of one measure bleeds over into the next and there is also a chord symbol at the start of that next measure.

If you mean you are using a non-default font for your chord symbols that includes too much space around its accidentals or other symbols, you will probably need to find a font that doesn't have that problem.
