Vibraphone and Marimba playback

• Feb 16, 2019 - 19:29

Hi all! I am very new to this software and would like to try and create a compilation of songs from imagine dragons to be played by a percussion ensemble.

I wanted to listen to my playback to listen if I got my notes right (I did!) but noticed both the Vibraphone and Marimba sounded identical. When I insert the same notes in both staffs I get the same sound. In reality, marimba obviously sounds different from a vibraphone.

What am I missing? Do I need some extension?

All help is appreciated!

I had used those instruments and I had got the real different sound from them!!!

I use MuseScore 3.0.2, with the "MuseScore General Full.sf3" soundfont file.

There should not be any problems to use marimba and vibraphone, in separated staves, at all.

You had to create the separated staves to those instruments at the beginning of your work. BUT... You can insert them at any time after that ("EDIT" menu, "INSTRUMENTS" option).

The sounds from marimba and vibraphone, in the "MuseScore General Full.sf3" are very similar, but... Not identical. There are other soundfont files with more "realistic" sounds. You have to look for it in the web (Google).

A very "enough" efficient soundfont file, is the old "GeneralUser GS MuseScore v1.422.sf2"

There is a MuseScore page with a lot of soundfont files you can download and use (included the already described). Look for that in the HandBook.

Maybe, the soundfont file you are using has some issue with these instruments... Maybe.

BTW, I added a file to test marimba and vibraphone, and other percussion instruments.

If you are using another version of MuseScore, just open the "*.mxl" file.
