Need help entering 16th notes 6 at a time

• Mar 29, 2019 - 00:26

I am trying to enter 16th notes, 6 at a time. Unfortunately the notation builds four at a time. Does anyone know how to change the default?

Time Sig is 3/4 and I have tried triplet function with no luck. I want to be able to change back and forth.

Are they tuplets or do you really want to beam 1 1/2 beats together? That would be extremely unusual. Assuming you want tuplets - six sixteenths in the space of one beat - select quarter note duration and press Ctrl+6.

In the 26th Variation of Bach's Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) there's 2 time signatures. We have 3/4 Time Signature in the Left Hand (3 Beats per Measure indicated as Quarter Notes) but the Right Hand has an 18/16 Time Signature (18 Beats per Measure indicated as Sixteenth Notes). 18/16 Time can actually be thought of as 3/4 Time w/ 16th Note Sextuplets on each Beat. Likewise in the 3rd Variation of BWV 656, the Bass Pedals play in 3/2 Time (3 Beats per Measure indicated as Half Notes), but the Manuals are playing in 9/4 Time (9 Beats per Measure indicated as Quarter Notes), 9/4 Time is basically 3/2 time w/ Quarter Note Triplets on each beat.

Local time signatures (especially unusual ones like 18/16) seem to play havoc with MusicXML exports.

Starting point: opening two measures from Variation 26 of the Goldberg Variations (https://edbmusescore.com/user/9836/scores/48072):

  1. First typeset these two measures in MS 3.6.2 and in MS 4.0.1, using a local time signature for 18/16. So far, so good. It looks just like the original:

  2. Now export the two measures from MS3 as MusicXML, and re-import the MusicXML into MS3. Chaos ensues in the lower staff:

  3. And now export the two measures from MS4 as MusicXML, and re-import the MusicXML into MS4. A very similar problem:
