Speedier Tuplet Entry

• Aug 3, 2014 - 23:56

Wouldn't it be faster and easier if the tuplet command divided a note into three (or five or seven) NOTES of the same pitch instead of one note and two (or four or six) rests?

You usually want NOTES in those slots rather than RESTS anyway and, if the notes are already there, all you need do is adjust the pitches.

A rest is a NOTHING.

A note is a SOMETHING.

And SOMETHING is almost always better than NOTHING.

If rests are what you want, you can easily delete the notes.

That's my opinion anyway . . . for what it's worth.

Maybe a user preference in version 2.0?

I don't understand. Having to adjust the pitches - presumably with the arrow keys? - would actually require over twice as many keystrokes as simply typing new pitches over the rests. That is, to enter a quintuplet C-D-E-F-G right now, you press

Ctrl+5 C D E F G

To do it the way you are describing, I think the most efficient way would be

Ctrl+5 C Right Ctrl+Up Right Ctrl+Up Ctrl+Up Right Ctrl+Up Ctrl+Up Ctrl+Up Right Ctrl+Up Ctrl+Up Ctrl+Up Ctrl+Up

Or maybe I am misunderstanding something?

Personally, I prefer rests but I can see how having an option might be useful for some people. I'd like tuplets (under Notes->Tuplets->Other) to allow the input of number of notes (e.g. 3), duration-equivalent note (e.g. 5 for a quarter-note) and then have the third value allow selection of the note type (8th, 16th etc.) for those tricky tuplets.

Anyway, without NOTHING (Zero) where would our modern world be?

NOTHING is more important than life.
Donut holes are made of NOTHING.
Therefore, donut holes are more important than life.

If you were working with pencil and paper, I'd bet you'd just draw in the notes and bracket (or beam) them with your triplet number. You wouldn't draw in rests, erase the rests and then put in the notes.

Adust notes with the arrow keys is SO EASY.

Keep in mind, I'm still in the process of learning the shortcuts.

If no one agrees with me, I suppose I just have to 'get with the program.'

Yes, adjusting note with arrow keys is easy - but it's still several clicks per note, plus the cursor key to move to next note when done.

I still don't see how this could possibly be simpelr than just typing "C D E F G"? I get the feeling that you are somehow doing something wrong and making it more complicated than necessary, but i can't figure out what. Unlike paper and pencil, entering notes on top of rests doesn't require you to erase a thing - just type the notes and they automatically replace the rests. Did you try typing *exactly* what I suggested: "Ctr+5 C D E F G"? A grand total of six keystrokes to create the quintuplet and enter all the pitches. I can't see how you could possibly improve on that.

Did you know that there is a tribe in South America that worships the number zero?

Boy,... is NOTHING sacred ?!!
