Spacing Between Staves

• May 28, 2019 - 23:34

One thing I have noticed with MuseScore is the fact that when you write in notes in a score, the spacing between the staves change, depending on how much you have written in.

I personally think a great update would be to make the staff spacing consistent, no matter how much is written into the score. It would definitely help make the music look more professional, and it would make the pages more uniform. Thanks!

In 3.1 released today you have the option to turn off auto placement globally. This will make it act like version 2 did and you can manually adjust staff distances using many different methods (that also worked in version 2).

Open Edit->Preferences and in the shortcuts tab define a shortcut for Toggle 'Automatic Placement' globally.

The alternative, though, is collisions, which look worse (professional engravers do add space regularly, they don't allow collisions normally). The usual way to avoid this is to manually adjust things to avoid collisions, and then the spacing takes care of itself.

That said, if you don't mind collisions, there is an undocumented option to keep autopalce on but turn off the staff spacing. You can't reach it by a dialog, by you can load the attached MSS file from the Style menu.
