1) play a score in MuseScore 3 using the internal (onboard) sound card without trouble
2) plug in external soundcard (Focusrite 2i2).
3) play back does not work anymore
4) after restarting MuseScore playback works again using the external soundcard.
The other way around (starting with a working playback on the external soundcard and switching to the internal one) has the same effect.

This is basically by design. But instead of restarting MuseScore you could use Edit > Preferences > I/O > Restart Audio and MIDI devices

I'll certainly try that. But to me it doesn't make sense to design it like this. Why not plug ' play?
