EMPTY MEASURES WITH WHOLE NOTE RESTS
I am new at using the program, but I find it very frustrating in that when I make a mistake, I wind up with empty measures (with whole not rests) which I can't remove. I tried cutting, deleting, but neither worked. I assume there is a simple solution to this, but I cannot find it. Thanks for any help.

Select measure, press Ctrl+Del
Ctrl+Delete does indeed delete measure, but I also wonder what kind of mistake you are making that results in these. I mean, empty measures are empty measure,s so I guess if the mistake was, you deleted the contents of the measure, then sure you can delete the measure, but if it was truly a mistake, deleting them is the opposite of what you want - you really want to simply undo the deleting of the contents.
So somehow, I think something else is going on that maybe is causing confusion. It would help if you attached a score and explained in more detail what you are trying to do and what is going wrong.

I often fall into the trap of pressing the Insert key (right next to the Delete key on my laptop). That inserts an empty measure. Would this keypress explain the problem in this case?

Yep :-). Of course, then a simple Undo (Ctrl+Z) will fix that quickly, but if you're too late with that, Ctrl+Delete is your friend indeed.
