Can Musescore Record Note Timings from MiDi?

• Aug 3, 2019 - 08:51

Hello,

I can tap out a riff on my MiDi but when I play the riff back the timings or delay spaces aren’t present. The Notes are correctly shown on the Stave, naturals, sharps and flats etc etc, but the timing has gone. It’s just steps through the riff plink plonk plink plonk.

I must be doing something wrong. Otherwise, this software is pure VooDoo! Luv it.

Thanks Marc. Yup, I’m using Real Time Automatic. So what you’re saying is that even RTA will attempt to guess at my masterpieces? Pity really, as it would be truly remarkable if it could guess better. So I’m not doing anything wrong, it’s just my expectations that need to reeled-in.

Maybe, but maybe you aren't using it correctly. Are you sure you are keeping in time with the metronome?

Somewhat better results can be had by first recording into a sequencer - a program designed form the beginning to handle real-time input - then importing the resulting MIDI file into MuseScore.

But yes, if you were expecting to just play whatever you want and have it magically turned into readable notation, I'd say some adjustment of expectations would be in order. You wouldn't try to write a novel by dictating to Siri, real-time input is similar.

" . . a program designed form the beginning to handle real-time input - then importing the resulting MIDI file into MuseScore." - Well, it does say Real-Time (Automatic).

"You wouldn't try to write a novel by dictating to Siri, real-time input is similar." - I hear you, but originally my expectations were raised by that first piccie. Yes?

Well, sure, and it does work, if you play simple rhythms and keep in time with the metronome. If you are literally seeing no rhythms, then it suggests you aren't doing something correctly, although we can't really tell what. If it's just they aren't exactly what you expect, then it's just a matter of expectations. Maybe record a video (eg, using OBS Studio) of what is happening so we can see? But also, be sure to read the Handbook carefully about how to use this feature, and I also recommend the video linked at the end. It's tricky to use, and you have to follow the steps listed precisely.

" . . if you play simple rhythms and keep in time with the metronome." Not just in time but give the PC time to assimilate my flourishes.

Marc, you are a very patient man - thank you. My problem was I was "rushing" the Metronome. I needed to realise that the processing takes time, and I was hell bent on getting down into dah groove and not easing off of the accelerator in my head - yah feel me? Sooooo.... I bounced the MiDi keys to match Mr M and on payback we is back to Tempo/speed.

This software is Smokin'!
