Coda not working

• Sep 11, 2019 - 20:11

Hello, I am trying to enter an SSA arrangement for "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" into Musescore and I'm having difficulty in the playback portion when it comes to the coda. During playback, the D.S. al coda in measure 64 returns to the segno in measure 5 without issue. However, the jump to the coda noted at beginning of measure 39 does not go to the coda, measure 65, as indicated. Instead, it plays on through measure 39 and on to the end of the piece. Is there something that I'm doing wrong? I've read other discussions stating that Musescore doesn't recognize "To coda" in playback, but I'm not sure what to put in it's place to make it jump to the coda the second time through. Playback accuracy is important because I'm using it as rehearsal track for my singers. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

In your posted score, the end of measure 38 shows a To Coda along with a Coda sign.

Regarding the Coda sign...
If you click on it and delete, playback works: the end of measure 38 will jump to the 'real' coda at measure 65. By 'real' coda I mean the one found in the Repeats & Jumps palette. It shows in the Inspector (click on the coda) as a Marker labelled 'codab'. This is how MuseScore marks the measure to play after the 'To Coda' is encountered.

Regarding the 'To Coda' instruction...
This was also taken from the Repeats & Jumps palette. Clicking on it also shows in the Inspector as a Marker (a place referred to by a jump like 'To Coda').

The problem is that your score has two Coda symbols - both are Markers labelled 'codab'. What you really want is for the Coda sign at the end of measure 38 to not be anything more than a simple text glyph, a mere symbol - a reminder to the musicians what sign to look for.
As such it should be entered as text and definitely not as a 'real' marker. (Remember, the 'real' coda is at measure 65 - where you even entered the word 'Coda' as text next to it.)

So...
How to enter a Coda sign as a simple text glyph, or mere symbol and not a marker?
Well...
Once you have deleted the coda marker at the end of measure 38, you will be left with the 'To Coda' jump. By double clicking on it to enter text edit mode, you can add the coda as a mere symbol from the special character widow.
See:

Another place to find the Coda symbol is in the Symbols section of the Master Palette. See:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/master-palette#symbols
(You can type 'coda' in the search box to find it.)

If you need to increase the size of the Coda symbol you can drag select it in edit mode and use the text toolbar which appears at the bottom of the screen.

Regards, and welcome aboard
