About backup files...
A recent post I read caused me to reevaluate my procedure. When I work on a file, say ABC.mscz, I save it when finished work, then click on "save a copy" and send the copy to a backup folder, which is never opened by the app. My thinking was that if the file is damaged or lost, the backup will be available. But... Am I supposed to alter the name of the backup in "save a copy"?

Shouldn't matter - if it's in a different folder, it's not going to overwrite the original. Only if you save to the same fodler do you need to rename to avoid overwriting the original.
