Files don't reload properly after a forced shutdown

• Oct 30, 2019 - 12:46

OS: macOS 10.15, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.3.0.24030, revision: cf84ff0

I had to shut down the app to update the operating system. I had about 20 files open, almost all of them "clean" (i.e., no outstanding modifications). The OS shutdown asked it to shut down.

It asked me to save some open files, and think I said save them. So it was exited in a controlled fashion.

When I came up in the patched OS, MuseScore said it could not find any of about 20 "magic name" files, "scjc1395.mscz", "scbc1395" etc., and so forth. I had to click through about 20 magic names and was scared that it would not end. When the app finally came up, none of the 20 files I had open were visible (maybe one).

When I looked in "Recent files", which is generally empty because it is categorically buggy, it listed about 20 such files and maybe 1 or 2 "real ones". I was able to click on them and open them, but the original pathname seems lost. "File Properties" one of them gives the "temp" pathname, /Users/bsg/Library/Application Support/MuseScore/MuseScore3/scfc1395.mscz .

It forgot where all the files came from, and couldn't even reload what it thought was right correctly.

Do you have restore previous session selected in your preferences? If so, then all of your scores from the previous session should be opened when you open MuseScore. If you have saved a file prior to the forced shutdown of MuseScore, there should be no SC*.msc? file on the computer because there is no reason for it. The SC files are only for recovery. As for the recent files list, it is probably indicative of files you have opened after your already opened files, at least I've noticed this. I have noticed the some versions (maybe 3.2.3) gets amnesia in the recent files list but the 3.3-RC3 seems to remember the recent files.

I find it difficult to believe an update in the OS would delete session and SC* files but leave things like your palettes and shortcuts untouched. Hopefully these comments will lead you to a better answer.

One more piece of advice, ALWAYS answer yes when MuseScore asks if you want to restore your previous session after a forced shutdown. It's always possible to close unwanted files but saying no deletes SC* files.

I always say "restore previous session", and it is in preferences. I wonder what is going on. I have survived OS upgrades without problem before (although maybe I had shut down manually). Still mystified. Thanks for these bits of knowledge. I'm sure I didn't lose any work, but its problem reloading recovery files was very mysterious.
